Here at HEROIC, a community of kind, determined, and courageous people come together to master speech writing, stage performance, book writing, and speaking-business strategy.

Scott “Kidd” Poteet is an astronaut. But he’s not just any astronaut. He’s a retired United States Air Force Lieutenant Colonel, Mission Director of the world’s first all-civilian mission to space, and pilot of the 2024 Space X Polaris Dawn mission.

‍

Ellen Latham is a highly trained exercise science expert. Her passion for health and fitness led her to design “The Ultimate Workout,” which she then transformed into one of the fastest-growing and most-recognized boutique-fitness-studio franchises in the country: Orangetheory Fitness.

‍

Blair Koch is a business owner and entrepreneur. But when a life-changing cancer diagnosis turned her life upside down, she knew something had to change. So she took both life and business by the reins and created her own definition of success, finding deeper purpose and greater fulfillment than ever before.

‍

What do these three all have in common?

‍

Yes, they’re all impressive, driven, high-achieving individuals with quite a few accomplishments under their belts. Additionally, they’re all speakers who share their message on stages across the country.

‍

And, they’ve all trained at HEROIC. In fact, they haven’t only trained with us, they’ve really thrived in the HEROIC learning community. They’ve taken what they’ve learned and applied it in their spheres, to save the world one speech at a time.

In each of our GRAD-level programs, humility leads, and learning rules.

Our diverse community ranges from Olympians to academics, C-suite leaders to activists, consultants to FBI agents. It's a melting pot of aspiring and professional speakers, entrepreneurs, skilled experts, and emerging thought leaders.

‍

But what makes someone a good fit for HEROIC’s training programs?

‍

Thriving at HEROIC

‍

When it boils down to it, it doesn’t matter how elite or amateur you feel as a speaker. What you’ve achieved so far (no matter how monumental or micro) isn’t too important either. Shiny accolades are impressive, but they aren’t a prerequisite for our training programs.

‍

No matter what field you’re coming from, no matter what your current level of experience is, you will thrive at HEROIC if you embrace a beginner’s mindset.

‍

By approaching this craft with the beginner’s mindset, you have an opportunity to break patterns you’ve established, take chances to learn new (and perhaps at first uncomfortable) techniques, and ultimately discover the power of a more deliberate, impactful, and fully expressed performance toolset.

GRAD Cohort 22 celebrates their graduation during their final in-person session of GRAD | Stage Performance Mastery at the HEROIC Campus.

Embrace Curiosity and Check Your Ego at the Door

‍

At the beginning of every single CORE | The Breakthrough Experience, we repeat this important truth: “If you don’t think you’re good enough to be here, you’re probably better than you think. On the other hand, if you think you’re better than everyone else here, you’re probably not as good as you think.”

‍

Often, the people who think they’re the best at speaking end up growing the least. Simply because they don’t check their ego at the door.

‍

Having a beginner’s mindset includes being willing to accept that there are different approaches to speaking, writing, and performing. It’s about being willing to take chances and try new things. Very frequently, having a willingness to embrace a playful approach, rather than staying stuck in a rigid mindset, is what leads to unforeseen breakthroughs.

‍

When students remain curious, both regarding the new skillset at their disposal and their own unique potential as performers, they tend to break the mold with greater ease and are able to recognize the fun to be had along the way.

“I recently completed HEROIC's GRAD | Speech Writing & Stage Performance Mastery programs, and I can honestly say it was one of the best professional investments I’ve ever made. Yes, I walked away with next-level speaking skills, but that was just the beginning. What I really gained? A fresh perspective on how I show up and communicate. A network of brilliant, driven professionals who will be lifelong allies. A new approach to my work that will serve me for the rest of my career.”

Bring a Generous Spirit

‍

It is perfectly understandable for students entering any rigorous experience to become consumed with the stress of getting each moment of the journey “right.” However, this can lead to a scarcity mindset: rather than focusing on each present moment, they worry about running out of time or wasting opportunities. That's when the tempting (and distracting) feeling of comparison can creep in.

‍

Focusing solely on what hypothetical things are or are not happening along the way can lead to missed opportunities for learning, growth, and connection.

‍

Generosity in the learning experience looks like actively participating in the community. It’s giving words of encouragement and standing ovations when a fellow speaker steps onstage. It's staying present to learn from fellow students, instead of mentally checking out or running lines in your head while others perform. It’s being willing to open up and share all of yourself and your brilliant ideas so others can learn from your growth as well.

‍

Showing generosity towards your cohort members and towards the learning process is important. But showing generosity towards yourself is essential.

‍

This isn’t a traditional learning experience where there are right or wrong answers and a pass or fail grade. Yes, it’s a challenging learning experience. Yes, you’ll have assignments to complete. Yes, there are due dates that help you stay on track. But it’s also a journey of self-discovery. You’re in the process of developing your Core Message and discovering your unique voice.

‍

There is no room or value in the creative process to beat yourself up all the time. Be generous and give yourself space to try and try again. Make adjustments when something doesn't work as you'd hoped, and remember to celebrate your successes.

Come to Grow, Not to Show

‍

Students who get the most value out of the HEROIC experience are very often the ones who recognize that there is much to be learned from watching and observing. Especially during Masterclass sessions and in small group workshops when their peers are performing and receiving feedback.

‍

And when it is your turn to work onstage or in the classroom, remember that the goal isn't perfection, it's presence. Presence in where you are in the process. Presence in being open to feedback, embracing the messiness, and being willing to take risks and learn equally from both the choices that work and the ones that don't.

‍

Focus on growing from each on-your-feet opportunity, taking direction, and impacting your audiences in the room, and you’ll soak up the education like a sponge.

Hold Yourself to a High Standard, While Trusting the Process

‍

Most of the leaders who train at HEROIC are willing to tackle rigorous activities. After completing Iron Man competitions, climbing the world’s tallest mountains, sealing million-dollar deals, and dedicating their lives to important causes, speaking training might seem like a relatively manageable endeavor.

‍

But the most successful students hold themselves to a high standard in all they do, especially when developing and performing their speeches and writing transformational books. This is a valuable characteristic, but it must be paired with trust in oneself and trust in the process.

‍

Often, trusting the process leads to major growth in ways that are potentially unexpected. Speakers who come in with a set vision of exactly what they want their finished product to look like might be surprised when, after doing the work, the result is something that doesn’t fit their original mold.

‍

You’ll experience less friction and internal push-back if you can trust the process and have faith that the result might not be what you had originally expected, but it will be exactly what your audience needs to be truly transformed in an impactful way.

Group Training Is a Gold Mine

‍

Some people mistakenly believe that the group-training setup of our programs is purely logistical. However, group training is actually one of the most valuable aspects of our programs. After all, it's called public speaking (not private speaking) for a reason.

‍

In fact, it’s what makes them effective. Here are just a few powerful reasons why:

‍

  • Delivering your speech onstage in front of an audience helps minimize your performance anxiety when you step onstage and perform your speech for a paying audience.
  • Sharing different versions of your Core Message or performing sections of your speech in front of your cohort (as you’re developing it) can help you receive immediate feedback and determine what resonates most powerfully.
  • Speakers get speakers work. Whether you want to spread your message with more impact or use speaking to drive revenue, being part of a community of speakers is essential. Relationships are everything in this industry, and group training is a catalyst for both life-long friendships and strategic business partnerships.

‍

The true value of the HEROIC experience stems from the vibrant community of speakers, authors, and thought leaders who cheer you on, celebrate your successes, and help you achieve your goals. It’s a community like no other.

‍

Thriving in a group-training setting is essential for maximum success at HEROIC. Truly, we can do more together than we can alone.

‍

Here, You Belong.

‍

After watching cohort after cohort of incredible humans go through the personal and professional transformation of our programs, I've noticed something indelible about the student experience. No matter where they come from, or what expectations they have coming in, our students are able to find a sense of belonging, a sense of deeper purpose, and a sense of community: all things that they end up treasuring for years to come.

‍

Watching walls come down, friendships emerge, and speakers transform to become the most influential and transformational versions of themselves is truly a sight to behold.

‍

HEROIC is the place where leaders who want to transform their performance, ideas, and content, and are willing to do the work it takes to get there, thrive.

‍

If that sounds like you, welcome home. Here, you’ll succeed, you’ll belong, and you’ll be transformed.
